Basic is a family of general-purpose high-level programming languages known for their user-friendly design philosophy. The name is an acronym derived from Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.

The original Dartmouth Basic was developed in 1964 by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA to introduce computer access to non-science students. Prior to this development, using computers was limited to scientists and mathematicians due to the requirement of custom software. Basic quickly gained popularity on microcomputers in the late 1970s and 1980s, often being a standard inclusion or even part of the firmware of the machines.

In modern times, Basic continues to be influential through various modified dialects and new languages like Microsoft Visual Basic inspired by its design. In 2006, 59% of developers using the .Net Framework exclusively employed Visual Basic .NET as their primary programming language.

Before the mid-1960s, computers were costly tools used for specialized tasks. Initially restricted to running one job at a time in batch processes, technological advancements made faster and more affordable computers available during the 1960s. This led to the adoption of time-sharing systems that allowed multiple users or processes to share CPU and memory resources. With these systems users could interact directly with the computer through terminals, in contrast to older batch processing setups.

As computer technology evolved during the 1960s and 70s, simplifying user-computer interaction became a major focus. The transition from command-line interfaces to programming languages like Basic was part of intensive research efforts during this period.
